The eclectic boutique in a Victorian mansion on East Eighth Street is packed with wardrobe treasures rarely found outside the more metropolitan areas — in sizes 0 to 22.

“We’re here for every stylish woman,” said Melanie Morris, who co-owns and runs the shop with Mimi Weed. “Our regular customers run the gamut from moms and young professionals to retired women and college students.”

The jeans room is “a constant,” said Weed, gesturing to the converted sitting room filled with premium denims such as the Red Engine line and spiced with eye-catching belts and vests featuring Johnny Was’ intricate embroidery.

Other offerings change with the seasons, and shipments arrive daily bearing designer names such as Karen Kane, Lily Pulitzer and Trina Turk.

Michael Stars hats, guaranteed to lend an intriguing cachet to even the most classic outfits, are always tucked into nooks and crannies around the house. The jewelry room with its specialty “bangle bar” offers a dernier cri selection of glam.

Mel & Mimi also bring in local designers several times a year for added interest and excitement.

“We had a lady who does specialty hats for Easter and the Steeplechase,” Morris said. “We also look out for jewelry artists to feature.”

Wandering through the two-story mansion, you’ll come across everything from evening gowns to cowgirl chic. Each of the rooms has a different theme – and even the pajamas, handbags, shoes, accessories and gifts can be counted on to have a unique flair.

During their 13 years in business, Weed and Morris have become experts at discovering the latest quality designs that are also fun to wear — and Mel & Mimi has evolved into an undisputed shopping destination in the process.
