Mrs. Church died March 8, 2013.
Born Aug. 12, 1930, in Chicopee, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Francis Purvis. She grew up and attended school in Gainesville, graduated with a teaching degree from Wesleyan College then later earned her master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Anne was married to the late Robert B. Church III in Georgia, later relocating to Knoxville, Tenn., where she lived most of her life.
She taught school at Bearden Elementary and other area schools and her passion was helping children with special needs. After 25 years of teaching, she went on to become the volunteer coordinator at LakeShore Mental Health Facility in Knoxville. Upon her retirement, she continued to volunteer there frequently. She was an active member of St. Mark Methodist Church as well as an avid traveler, hiker and dancer.
She is survived by her daughters, Tanya Church Craig of Charleston, S.C., Hollis Church of Kilauea, Hawaii; her grandchildren, Kira Ohlgren, Eric Craig and Hannah Craig, all of Charleston, S.C.; her sisters, Jean Ward of Gainesville, Sue Speir of Athens, Peggy Robinson of Cornelia, and Franny Robinson of Tignell.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the World Wildlife Fund.
