Mr. Powell died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 14, 1921, in Banks County, he was a son of the late Martin Luther and Lora Greenway Powell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Powell Parson, Rosie Powell Parson, Ruby Powell Davidson; brothers, Charlie Powell, Arthur Powell, James “Pete” Powell, Willie Powell, Thomas Powell and Swayne Powell.
He was a United States World War II veteran, having served his country proudly in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Powell was a member of the local Grant Reeves VFW Post No. 7720, as well as Woodmen of the World, Cornelia Lodge, the Civilian Conservation Corps., and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include his loving wife, Julia Wade Powell of Lula; brother, John Powell of Elberton; sisters-in-law, Joyce W. Franklin of Alto, Gertrude W. Grier of Lula; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
