Funeral services for Gladys Gilbert Newell, 98, of Cornelia, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 10, at Cornelia Christian Church with Rick Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Level Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Newell died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012.

Born Aug. 8, 1914, in Jefferson County, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Roy Franklin and Jennie Belle Olomon Gilbert. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell Newell.

Mrs. Newell was a member of Cornelia Christian Church. She retired as a Licensed Practical Nurse with 33 years of service. Mrs. Newell was a prolific writer; she began writing poetry as a teenager and was recognized for her achievements in that area in 2000, when she was published in the book, “Poets of the Century.” In 2010, she published “Inspirational Witticisms and Devotions.”

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Audra and Richard White of Cocoa, Fla., and Phyllis and David Terrell of Cornelia; two sisters, Freida Schmidt of Woodlawn, Ill., and Marjorie Peterson of Clinton, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
