Funeral services for Howard Otha Hogsed, 83, of Toccoa, were held at 4 p.m. April 4, at Tates Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerrell Beatty and the Rev. Sherry Lewis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors by the Georgia National Guard.

Mr. Hogsed died April 1, 2013, after an extended illness.

Born April 24, 1929, in Banks County, he was a son of the late Hamilton Rene and Celia Mae Myers Hogsed. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Crumley, Betty Watkins, Thelma Hogsed and Glenda Mae Hogsed; and brothers, Jimmy, Walter, Don and Earl Hogsed.

Mr. Hogsed was a member of Tates Creek Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving on the front lines of the Korean War at Old Baldy, Porkchop Hill and Heart Break Ridge, just to name a few. He served as a corporal in the 7th Division. He loved being outside, camping and enjoying nature. His family and his church were most important to him. He worked with Johnson Motors, Mt. Vernon Mills and Fieldale Farms.

Mr. Hogsed was a big jokester and passed away on April Fools Day.

Survivors include his wife, Grace King Hogsed; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kerri Hogsed; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Rodney Payne, Pamela and Criss Cobb, and Kim and Stuart Gaines; niece and her husband, Angela and Reed Ballew; grandchildren, Jake and Amber Mize, Cale and Karli Cobb, April and Taz Buffington, John Mize, Cody and Carimy Cobb, Crayton and Vanessa Gaines, Karli Hogsed, and Trevor Payne; four great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Pearl and Harlen Wilson and Myrtle Stroud; several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the building fund at Tates Creek Baptist Church.

Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
