Mr. Compton died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
A native of Cobb County, he was the son of the late Jesse Thomas and Cordelia McCutcheon Compton.
A resident of Habersham County since 1991, Mr. Compton and his wife Marion had recently moved to Gainesville. He had worked in the real estate business for a number of years and still held an active broker’s license at the age of 93. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarkesville.
Mr. Compton served in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in the 8th Army Air Force Base Unit 384th BG 546 SQ during World War II. Mr. Compton flew 25 missions of bravery while serving in England and Germany. He was a member of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Marion Shirley Compton of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law; Janis and Barry Cain of Gainesville; daughter, Cynthia Compton Simms of Marietta; grandchildren, Cathryn Alvis and husband David, Kendal Simms, Chris Silcox and fiancée Brandi Cabe, Casey Silcox and wife Shelby; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Carter Alvis, Avery Silcox, Hayden and Harper Silcox. Being one of 10 children, Mr. Compton is survived by a sister, Margaret Hardage (100), of Perry. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
