Two men, suspects in a series of metal thefts in Northeast Georgia, are in custody and being questioned by investigators with the Habersham County Sheriff's Department. "One was arrested," said Sheriff Joey Terrell. "The other [suspect] was already in jail in Franklin County," Terrell said. "They are still being interviewed," Terrell said, about 12:45 p.m. June 15. "I think it solves about 14 thefts in our county," Terrell said. Other areas hit by the suspected thieves include White, Hall, Towns, Gwinett and Union counties. Among businesses targeted by the thieves locally were Midway Electric, Mountain Air and Heating, A&A Electric, Blue Ridge Tobacco, Holland Produce and Higgins Construction Co. One not solved, according to Terrell, was metal theft at Hanson Aggregate Southeast Region, which operates a quarry off Habersham Mill Road. "They said they didn't" commit that particular theft, Terrell said. "They have been very open, very talkative." The suspects have told investigators they did not steal anything very large, Terrell said, as was the case with material stolen at the quarry. On Dec. 31, 2011 thieves stole two 300-pound brass bushings, copper wire and other metal from the quarry. Value of the loss at Hanson was estimated at $250,000.
