Mr. Shelton died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born April 29, 1949, in Stephens County, he was a son of the late Joseph Manston and Mary Jane Cleveland Shelton. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Shelton; a sister, Rita Faye Shelton; and his father-in-law, the Rev. Lester Burgess.
He was a loving, devoted husband, father and Pop.
He was a member of Georges Creek Baptist Church in Easley, S.C., was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway, and was a U. S. Army Vietnam-era veteran. Mr. Shelton was a Mason and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Gainesville City School Board from 1982-90 and the Chestatee Regional Library Board. He was a graduate of Stephens County High School and North Georgia Tech.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Burgess Shelton; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Carl Reddish and Joy and Pick Speed; sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Layne Shelton, and Jack Shelton; grandchildren, Danielle and Andrew Reddish, Baylee, Alex, Tori, Jay and Maggie Shelton, and John Pick Speed; brothers, Doug Shelton and Joe Terrell Shelton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mattie and Rich Smalko, and Renee and Troy Smith; his mother-in-law, Christine Burgess; brother-in-law, Phil Burgess and his wife Jimmie; sister-in-law, DeJuan Martin and her husband Ken; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorials may be made to the Gideon’s Memorial Bible Fund, the American Cancer Society, or the Georges Creek Baptist Church.
