Funeral services for Shirley Jean Tankersley Washington, 70, of Mt. Airy, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Pruitt officiating. Burial followed in Old Nacoochee Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Washington died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Habersham Medical Center.

Born Aug. 1, 1942, in Cherokee, N.C., she was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Jeanette Ballew Tankersley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Billingsley.

Mrs. Washington was a member of Old Nacoochee Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Washington of Mt. Airy; son, James Washington of Toccoa; daughters and sons-in-law, Janis and Tony Cody of Mt. Airy and Tina and Thomas Griffin of Clarkesville; brother, Paul Tankersley of Jackson; sisters, Rachel Wooldridge of Conyers, Carolyn Pettus of Gastonia, N.C., and Ruby Murphy of Stockbridge; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
