Memorial services for Monika F. Lynch, 81, Athens, are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 2, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Lloyd Free officiating.

A private burial was held earlier.

Mrs. Lynch died July 29, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 5, 1932, in Dresden, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Rudolf and Antonie Fehrmann.

Mrs. Lynch was of the Lutheran faith.

She came to the United States in 1955 and married J. Walter Lynch of Cornelia in 1959. Both being professors at Georgia Southern University, they moved to Statesboro. Upon their retirement in 1977, they relocated to Athens. During her retirement years, Mrs. Lynch took great pride in spending quality time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed the companionship of her beloved dogs.

In addition to her beloved husband of 54 years, Walter, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Thornton Johnston of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cindy Lynch of Memphis, Tenn.; son, David Lynch of Marietta; brother and sister-in-law, Norbert and Annelies Fehrmann of Petersburg, Germany; five grandchildren, Melanie Lynch of Los Angeles, Calif., Danielle Lynch of Malibu, Calif., Michael Lynch of Memphis, Tenn., Grady “ULY” Johnston and Annabel Johnston, both of Athens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athens Area Humane Society, 1781 Mars Hill Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677; or Saint Mary’s Hospice House, 1660 Jennings Mill Road, Bogart, GA 30622.
