Funeral services for Luther Eugene “Gene” English, 96, of Clarkesville, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 4, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Grady Walden officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens, with full military honors provided by Habersham County American Legion Post No. 84, Grant Reeves VFW Post No. 7720 and Rabun County DAV Chapter No. 15.

Mr. English died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013.

Born May 16, 1917, in Habersham County, he was the son of the late David Luther and Jessie Bishop English. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Mize English.

Gene was a United States Navy veteran, having proudly served his country during World War II. Mr. English held a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Georgia. He was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service with more than 40 years of service. He enjoyed wood-working, landscaping and gardening. Gene was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church and Woodman of the World.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa English and Frank Dean of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jan English of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; sister, Thelma English King of Decatur; grandchildren, David and Sloan Dean, and Sarah and Andrew English; and great-grandchildren, Leslie Dean and Sloan Franklin Dean IV.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
