Henry Garland ‘Whit’ Nicholson

Funeral services for Henry Garland “Whit” Nicholson, 90, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at Hills Crossing Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Singletary, the Rev. Terry Rice and the Rev. Furman Lewis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Nicholson died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, following a period of declining health.

Born June 24, 1923, in Habersham County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Effie Nichols Nicholson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Irene Blair Nicholson.

Mr. Nicholson was a United States Navy veteran, having served during World War II. While in the Navy he served in the American and Asiatic-Pacific theaters aboard the SS Richard Ewell and SS Aberdeen Victory. He was retired from Carwood Manufacturing Company. Mr. Nicholson was a deacon and member of Hills Crossing Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Brenda Nicholson of Demorest and Stacy and Carol Nicholson of Portland, Ore.; sister, Betty Ferguson of Alto; grandchildren, Matt, Ben, Andrew, Caroline, and John; as well as five great-grandchildren.
