Riley ‘R.C.’ Clinton Purcell

A celebration of life service for Riley “R.C.” Clinton Purcell, 76, of Demorest, was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Lamar Purcell, Rick Purcell, Debbie Purcell and Rhonda Purcell officiating. Burial followed in the VFW Memorial Park with the Rev. Royce Winters officiating. Full military honors were provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard, Grant Reeves VFW Post No. 7720, Habersham County American Legion Post No. 84, and Rabun County DAV Chapter No. 15.

Mr. Purcell died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 29, 1937, in Baldwin, he was the son of the late David Riley and Gertrude Worley Purcell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Purcell Knowling; and brothers, Luther Purcell, Roy Purcell and Haskell Purcell.

Mr. Purcell was a graduate of North Habersham High School and North Georgia Technical College. He was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church, where he served as clerk for a number of years. Mr. Purcell was a member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge No. 325 F&A.M; he was recently honored by being presented his 50-year apron and pin. Mr. Purcell was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a retired electrician with the Russell Corp., with several years of service. He was on the board of directors with Engineered Openings, where he served as the treasurer. Mr. Purcell was a violinist, having played with the Toccoa Symphony for a number of years. He also played the violin in church and at family functions.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Kaye Nell Gaddis Purcell of Demorest; daughters, Debbie Purcell of Cornelia and Rhonda Purcell of Demorest; granddaughter, Holly Howington of Atlanta; sister, Reba McCoy of Dallas; sister-in-law, Martha Purcell West of Cornelia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
