Funeral services for Virgil Gerome Parris, 85, of Cornelia, formerly of the Alarka community in Bryson City, N.C., will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 2, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Beasley and the Rev. Benji Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Mason Branch Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Bryson City VFW Post 9281.

Mr. Parris went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his residence.

A native of Swain County, N.C., he was the son of the late Taylor and Dora Barker Parris. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Davis Parris; one brother and seven sisters.

Mr. Parris was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the Deep Gap Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Moss Parris; son, Everett Parris and wife Judy; daughter, Lillian Parris Birchfield; four grandchildren, Maria Birchfield Henry, Sonya Parris Bennet, Virgil Ray Parris, John Wayne Parris; six great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Ralph and Dianne Moss, Ralph and Blanch Beasley; five stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; brother, Troy Parris; and sister Vinnie Phillips.
