Funeral services for Douglas E. Dennis, 67, of Plant City, Fla., were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Wells Memorial. Burial took place in Shiloh Cemetery.

Mr. Dennis died from lung cancer on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Doug retired from Hillsborough County, Fla., after 26 years of service. He was instrumental in starting the recycling program for the county, and introduced strong guidelines and regulations for many of the contractors. He also was a proud Eagle Scout and loved the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs.

Doug is survived by his wife, Sue West Dennis; sons, Eric Dennis (Marylyn), Jasen Dennis (Gina); stepsons, Brian West (Jennifer), David West (Erin); 10 grandchildren; sister, Marcia Mateling (Randy); nephew, Joel Mateling (Kimberly) of Alto; niece, Kari Mateling of Marietta; and uncle, James H. Smith of Ocean Park, Md.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Smith of Fitchburg, Mass.; mother, Joan Dennis, and adoptive father, Norman Dennis, of Savannah.
