A celebration of life service for Patricia Gail Alexander Brown, 65, of Toccoa, formerly of Cleveland, was scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, in the chapel of Alexander Funeral Home, Cleveland, with the Rev. Andy Childs officiating.

Mrs. Brown died Friday, July 25, 2014.

Gail was born in White County on March 26, 1949, to the late Marlin Alexander and Dicie Palmer Alexander. In addition to her parents, Gail was preceded in death by her brothers, Curtis Alexander and C.L. Dillard, and her sisters, Lorene Lowery, LaVaughn Hampton and Edith Tyner.

She graduated with honors from White County High School in 1967. She was named “Chieftain Queen” and was voted “Most Lady Like.” Following high school, Gail attended Piedmont College, graduating in 1973 with a degree in Early Childhood Education; later she would earn her master’s degree from Brenau University. She would begin and end her career in education with the Habersham County Board of Education, retiring in 2005 with some 30 years of service to the children of Habersham County, which she dearly loved. Gail took education very seriously; she was one of the first educators in Habersham County to initiate the Reading and Recovery Program, a program designed to ensure all children had the same access to books. While officially retiring in 2005, Gail continued to teach part-time for a number of years. She was a member of the Georgia Retired Educators and the American Association of University Women. She and her husband Randy were members of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Stephens County. Gail will forever be remembered for her quiet resolve, her love of family and children and the desire to see them learn and grow, as well as her giving heart and her unforgettable sense of humor.

She is survived by her husband, Randy Brown of Toccoa; daughter, Rebecca Shedd and fiance, Vincent Krogmann of Demorest; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Karl Garcia of Duluth; stepsons, Andrew Brown and Christopher Brown; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Ted Webb of Cornelia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Margie Alexander of Cornelia, Jack and Gladys Dillard of Rex. Gail is also survived by her grandchildren, Kya Garcia and Lio Garcia.

It is requested memorial donations be made to either Reach Out and Read, National Center, 56 Roland St., Suite 100D, Boston, MA 02129-1243; or Ebenezer Baptist Church, Worldwide Ministries, 49 Rose Lane, Toccoa, GA 30577.
