Funeral services for James Lawton Erwin, 84, of Cornelia, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Roy Lee Mitchell and the Rev. Lewis Fortner officiating. Burial followed in Level Grove Cemetery, with military honors provided by Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720, American Legion Post 84, and Rabun County DAV Chapter 15.

Mr. Erwin died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at his residence.

Born Sept. 23, 1929, in Habersham County, he was a son of the late Ernest and Fannie Erwin Tilson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Mr. Erwin was a member and deacon of Mud Creek Baptist Church, and was retired from Schnadig Corporation with 18 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by Frances Ivester Erwin of Cornelia, his loving wife of 63 years. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Judy Marie Erwin of Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law, Rickey and Kathy Erwin of Cornelia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janie and Lonnie Baker of Maysville, and Marie and Troy Collins of Carnesville; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Carolyn Tilson of Homer; grandson, Heath Caudell; and great-grandson, Cruise Caudell.
