Plenty happening in Hancock Park

Hancock Park is definitely a downtown Dahlonega hotspot, even if it’s best known for its cool grass lawn and sizable shady trees.

The beloved greenspace is located just behind the historic Dahlonega Square on the corner of North Park and Warwick streets. It features an open space suitable for large crowds, a game of football, baseball, soccer, Frisbee, cornhole of any other outdoor game you can think of.

During the summer and fall, Hancock Park is a bustling place on the weekends, featuring concerts from some of Dahlonega’s and North Georgia’s most popular musicians for the First Friday Concert Series. And on the last Friday of the month in the summer, the Modern Woodmen of America sponsor Movies Under the Stars. This is a family-oriented event that features some of the most popular children’s movies of the day, with plenty of giveaways and activities for kids.

The Zak McConnell Stage is always a busy place during the summer, as well for festivals like the Bear On the Square Mountain Festival each April, the Trail Fest Festival in September, and the Gold Rush Days Festival in October.

“There’s no feeling in the world like playing for a big crowd in your hometown with lots of family and friends there,” said hometown performer Kurt Thomas. “Hancock Park is definitely one of my favorite shows I do every year.”

Hancock Park was also featured prominently in the Hallmark movie “Christmas In Homestead,” which was filmed entirely in Dahlonega. A temporary and functioning ice-skating rink was set up well before wintertime and played a major role in the movie.

The downtown park is also home to geocaching, a historic diving bell, and The Maibaum History Tree sculpture, which was created for the Golden Millennium Celebration. So, if you’re ever in Dahlonega and the kids are tired of shopping, grab a ball out of the trunk and let them release some energy in the park, or break out the lawn chairs for an outdoor movie or a concert.

Whether you’re looking for an organized event with built-in entertainment, or just a place to enjoy nature and the great outdoors, Hancock Park is always waiting and ready for your visit.
