Fall weather should provide the perfect setting for the 7th annual 2019 Steins & Wine Around the Square. Craft beer enthusiasts, wine connoisseurs and many non-drinkers will enjoy the variety offered at the event. From 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, seven breweries, five wineries and a meadery will dispense this year.
Held each year on the historic courthouse grounds of the Beal Center in downtown Hayesville, the event has become a popular gathering for friends and family. Beer and wine vendors will use the same guidelines as their home locations. Everyone is welcome, but only those 21 and older with a valid ID will be issued an armband to consume alcohol. State law requires all ID’s be checked, regardless of age.
In addition, Taste of Hayesville will return by popular demand with food from eight different Clay County restaurants, including Black Dog Tavern, Hayesville Brewing Company, Mariolino’s, Nocturnal Brewing, Rib Country, Paris and Company, Valley River Brewing and the brand-new Hayesville Grille. For $5, each guest will receive a small plate and a variety of appetizer sized portions, served by volunteers. Choices range from beef, chicken, pork, vegan, pimento cheese apps, to macaroni salad, slaw and desserts.
From the time the gates open, background music will be played by local musicians. Andy Ward will strum the mandolin while George Boothroyd plays guitar and Moon Hamilton will play classical guitar and violin.
Afterwards, stay around town awhile to dine in one of Hayesville’s eateries, but make sure to shop the additional food and gift items being offered by local vendors.
SMM Farms will have herb samples and other food gifts may be found at the Two Country Hens booth. High Mountain Meadows Farm and Creamery will bring a selection of goat cheese which always sells quickly.
Wehrloom Honey & Meadery has joined the Steins & Wine fun. Not only will they be selling retail and food items related to honey but their mead products crafted from Appalachian honey will be available.

• Hayesville Brewing Company is located at 1568 Highway 64 West. HBC offers a selection of sandwiches and simple eats, but check the Facebook page for daily specials. • Nocturnal Brewing Company occupies a renovated car dealership on a downtown Hayesville corner at 893 U.S. 64 Business. Offering a locally inspired menu, NBC now serves lunch, too.

• Eagle Fork Vineyards makes its home in Clay County and has a tasting room on the corner of the Hayesville Square at 100 Sanderson Street. The tasting room outside of town is at 8 Cedar Cliff Road east of Hayesville which frequently has live music. Ticket prices were reduced last year to comply with ABC Commission regulations which do not allow alcohol tastings to be included in entry fees.
Kids 12 and under are free. This year’s event will benefit restoration to the Old Jail Museum.
