Days left for Georgians to register to vote

Register by Tuesday, Oct. 9, to cast votes in Nov. 6 general election

With a deadline of Oct. 9 fast approaching, Habersham Countians have mere days to register to vote in the upcoming Nov. 6 general election and Dec. 4 general election/special election runoff.

Habersham County ballots include state races for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, commissioner of agriculture, commissioner of insurance, state school superintendent, commissioner of labor, public service commissioners, U.S. representative in 116th Congress from Ninth Congressional District of Georgia, 50th District state senator and 10th District state representative.

Local races include Habersham County Commission districts two and three, and Habersham County Board of Education districts three, four and five.

Habersham County will hold a special election asking voters whether they support selling liquor by the drink and on Sundays, as well as a proposed Roads and Bridges Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, an additional 1-percent sales tax projected to collect $35.5 million over its life of five years to repave crumbling roads and bridges across the community.

The town of Alto will hold a special election asking residents whether they support package sales of beer and wine.

The city of Clarkesville will hold a special election to fill the vacant Post 2 seat on the Clarkesville City Council.

Early voting will begin from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 15-Nov. 2, at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office, 555 Monroe St. (basement), Clarkesville.

Absentee ballots are available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday also at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office.

Advance voting will be held from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 29-Nov. 2 at the Habersham North Precinct, located at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center, 120 Paul Franklin Road (Toccoa Highway), Clarkesville, and the Habersham South Precinct, located at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, 325 Oak St. (banquet hall/gym), Cornelia.

Saturday, Oct. 27, voting will take place at both north and south precincts from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
