Early voting on for District 28 election ‘redo’
Voters in Banks, Habersham and Stephens counties may now return to the polls to again decide the Georgia House of Representatives District 28 race, a “redo” of the May 22 primary election, results of which were impacted by what Habersham County officials referred to as a House districting error.
Early voting began Tuesday for Habersham County’s active voters who reside in District 28 and wish to cast their vote as to who should represent them between candidates Chris Erwin and incumbent Dan Gasaway.
Gasaway filed suit last summer against defendants Habersham County Election Supervisor/Chief Registrar Laurel L. Ellison, his opponent Erwin and then-Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, alleging a districting error affected results of the May 22 primary, which Gasaway lost to Erwin by 67 votes across Banks, Habersham and Stephens counties. However, after hearing the case, a judge called for the new election in late September, ordering results from the May 22 primary be set aside after hearing at least 70 voters fell victim to the error, more than the number of votes Gasaway lost by.
The Habersham County Elections and Registration Office stated only voters who live within House District 28, who were registered to vote by the April 24 registration deadline and eligible to vote in the May 22 General Primary, and who did not vote or voted Republican or Nonpartisan, are eligible to vote in the Dec. 4 Special Republican Party Primary Election. This includes voters who were mis-assigned to House District 10, but who live in House District 28, it stated.
With the exception of county offices being closed Nov. 22-23 for Thanksgiving, early and absentee voting will take place now through Nov. 30 at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office, Clarkesville. The office is located in the basement of the county administration building (old courthouse) at 555 Monroe St. Early voting will take place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Saturday voting will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center (Habersham North Precinct), located at 120 Paul Franklin Road off Toccoa Highway in Clarkesville, and First Baptist Church of Cornelia (Habersham South Precinct), located in the banquet hall/gym at 325 Oak St., Cornelia.
Advance votes may be cast at the Habersham North and Habersham South precincts from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 26-30.
Votes may also be cast Election Day from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Habersham North and Habersham South precincts or at Mt. Airy Town Hall (town voters only), located at the Old Mt. Airy Schoolhouse, 1231 Dicks Hill Parkway, Mt. Airy.
