Funeral services for the Rev. Alton Burrell, 71, of Carnesville were held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Toccoa Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joey Whitlock and the Rev. Bill Thomas officiating. Interment followed the service in the church cemetery.
Rev. Burrell passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2018.
Born in Clarkesville on Aug. 6, 1947, Rev. Burrell was the son of the late Howard and Mattie Lou Dover Burrell. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the South Carolina and Georgia National Guards.
He started preaching on the West Point Methodist Circuit in 1976, then in the Jenkinsburg Methodist Circuit. Rev Burrell was ordained by Clarkesville Baptist Church in 1980. In the following years, Rev. Burrell preached at Hollywood Baptist Church in Clarkesville, Crossroads Baptist Church in Carnesville and Ball Ground First Baptist Church in Ball Ground. He was an interim pastor at Carnesville Baptist Church and last preached at Shiloh Baptist Church in Toccoa. Rev. Burrell served as chaplain and firefighter at Deep Creek-Habersham County Fire Department and Carnesville Fire Department, and he was a chaplain for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a Boy Scout in Clarkesville Troop 5, as well as a Cub Scout Master and a Scout Master. He was also an assistant Scout Master in Ball Ground Troop 130. Rev. Burrell was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, boat and camp with his family, as well as travel to the beach. He adored spending time with his grandchildren. Rev. Burrell’s heart was in missions, and one of the most rewarding times in ministry was a mission trip to Brazil. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Howard Burrell and two infant sons.
Survivors include his wife Florrie Gail Carter Burrell of Carnesville; daughter and son-in-law Leigh and the Reverend Joey Whitlock of Carnesville; son and daughter-in-law Jason and Amber Burrell of Demorest; and grandchildren Maley, Anna, Abigail, Drew and Maggie Whitock, and Noah and Cooper Burrell.
