Shirley Higham Patten
A memorial service for Shirley Higham Patten, 79, of Demorest, was held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. Bill Wallen officiating.
Mrs. Patten passed away under hospice care Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018. She was preceded in death by her son, John Richard Patten, her father, Darrell Joseph Higham, and her foster parents, Clarence and Edith Haynes.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jerry R. Patten, Demorest; children, Pamela (Rick) Nusbaum, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michael R. Patten, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Debra (Gerald) McKendree, Flowery Branch, Michelle (Bryan) Nixon, Lilburn; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; mother, Alice Witte Higham, Lenexa, Kansas; brothers, Douglas (Sandy) Higham, Hurst, Texas, Mickey (Leanna) Higham, White House, Ohio; sister, Elizabeth (Ray Gilbertson) Higham, Lenexa, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Patten was born May 5, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, and was a 1957 graduate of Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Iowa. She raised her family in Marshalltown, Iowa, and moved to Georgia in 1987. Mrs. Patten was a skilled bookkeeper and corporate secretary. After retiring from Tull Metals, she volunteered by reading to school children. She moved to Demorest in 2006, where she tended to her flowers and lovingly cared for family and friends. All will miss her gentle wisdom, good humor and unconditional love. Her bright blue eyes were windows to the most tender and loving heart.
