The Habersham County Board of Education’s District 2 incumbent Robert Barron is running for his fifth term against opponent Ernie Garrett.

Barron taught for over 30 years at Habersham Central along with driving school buses. He currently teaches at Tallulah Falls School. He said he first ran for school board “to get on the other side of the business of school.”

Barron said he likes the way the board is currently running and wants to continue with the way it is.“I think that we have a well operating, efficient board and I’d like for us to keep moving in that direction,” he said. “Let’s keep going with what we got.”

He said the current board is careful not to veer from its strategic plan and to do everything with the kids in mind. Barron encourages the public to not only come to the board’s monthly meetings, but also its work sessions.

“If people really want to find out what the system is doing, they need to come to those work sessions,” he said.

Barron has watched the county’s graduation rate climb during his four terms, and wants to continue to see it increase, along with being a part of future board initiatives.

He also wants to remind voters that they can vote for him even if they don’t live in his district and that the school board is a countywide election.
