Habersham County Sheriff’s investigators are looking into an armed robbery at a Cornelia convenience store last week.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, a male armed with a knife entered Hayes Corner Convenience Store and forced the clerk to open the cash register and turn over an undetermined amount of money. The man then left the store on foot.
“It fits the MO of armed robberies we have seen in Banks County, Hall County and further south toward Atlanta,” Sheriff Joey Terrell said.
Security footage from the store revealed the individual was a stocky-build male subject who was completely covered in athletic track pants, a dark-colored hoodie and gloves. His face was also completely covered.
“He whispered to the clerk, so we don’t even have his voice,” Terrell said. “This was someone who knew what they were doing and how we would try to identify him. He hit the place around closing time, he used all the methods you would see in the bigger cities.”
Habersham County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit responded to the scene and worked with Uniform Patrol deputies to attempt to track the man’s movement.
The track was unsuccessful, and it appears that the man had a vehicle standing by somewhere near the immediate area of the store.
Hayes Corner Convenience Store is located on Georgia Highways 17 and 105 in the Fairview community.
“We are hoping someone saw a suspicious vehicle on 105 somewhere, but we do not even know what brand of car we are looking for,” Terrell said.
The investigation is still preliminary in nature and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at (706) 839-0557.
