On Thursday, two students of Habersham Ninth Grade Academy were hospitalized after being burnt during an activity in science. One of the students was released from the hospital the same day of the incident while the other was released two days later.
According to the press release, a separate student did not follow safety protocols, causing the two students to be burned.
On the call to 911, the caller informed dispatch that the students were badly burned, “one, his entire front torso, the other student his back ... Probably about 80 percent of his back.”
In that same press release, it is mentioned that “An investigation revealed that there was no malicious intent by the student who did not follow safety protocols.” Due to the injuries sustained by their decision, the student who did not follow protocols is “being held responsible for her actions.”
After the incident, parents are wondering what more teachers can do to ensure the safety of the students. The press release states “the teacher in the lab acted swiftly to care for the students involved in the incident. We are grateful for his actions to care for all students involved. The administration and staff at the Ninth Grade Academy did an excellent job of responding to and handling the incident.” In addition, the press release praises the response from Habersham Emergency Services.
The school will not be releasing more details related to the incident publicly, but the families of those involved have received more information.
The administrators are “optimistic about the current condition of both students.”
