Funeral services for Arlene Carlan Whiting, 87, of Demorest, were held Sunday, May 23, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth McEntire and Dr. Charles Holland officiated. Interment followed in Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest where Bishop Ronald Wilson officiated.

Mrs. Whiting took her heavenly flight home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 19, 2022 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Born Jan. 29, 1935, at the Charm House in Clarkesville, she was a daughter of the late John William and Lila Magnolia Nix Carlan. In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Whiting; son, Jerry Lamar Whiting; sisters, Linda Abernathy, Manolia Bowden, JoAnn Taylor, and Myra Bohannon; and brother, Jerry Carlan.

Arlene was a professional seamstress and the owner of Arlene's and Arturo's Alterations for over 30 years. She was Mom, Mama, Mother, Nanny, and friend to many. She expressed her love for others by sharing her craft of cooking meals, baking goodies, and making quilts. In her spare time, Arlene enjoyed trips to the beach, working in her flower gardens, and watching the Atlanta Braves. Most of all, she loved spoiling her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and others that she considered as family. Arlene was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Kay Whiting Stephens and Guy Fitzgerald of Demorest, Johnny and Debbie Whiting of Turnerville, and Rick and Pam Whiting of Mount Airy; sister-in-law, Kristy Carlan and brother-in-law, Dewaine Bohannon, both of Demorest; grandchildren, Shane and Misty McEntyre, Wendy and David Newsome, Casey Whiting, Julie and Nelson Wilkinson, and Niki and Bradley Smith; great-grandchildren, Alex McEntyre, Lauren McEntyre, Wyatt Turner, Lana Turner, Rylee Smith, Hallee Smith, Nelson Charles Wilkinson, Sarah Wilkinson, Jacob Wilkinson, Lily Whiting, Addie Whiting, and Dylan Newsome; special friend and co-worker, Arturo Velazquez; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A special thank you to Pruitt Health Hospice and their staff members, Ashley Wood, Bobbie Broner, Amy Grissom, Jodi McCombs, and Rhonda Smith for their outstanding care through this journey.
