A memorial service for James M. Johns Jr., 80, of Alto, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at First Presbyterian Church, Clarkesville with a reception to follow.

Mr. Johns passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019.

Born May 13, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ruth Ellis Hall Johns and J. Monroe Johns. 

He lived in Farmville, Virginia, until entering college at Virginia Tech and the U.S. Navy. He was an Eagle Scout (1955). He earned a BS in business administration from Virginia Tech in 1962, Bachelor of architecture from Virginia Tech in 1970, and Master of architecture in environmental systems from Virginia Tech in 1972.  Jim was a Lt. Commander in the United States Navy and honorably served from 1962-1968.

In his professional career, Jim worked with Wilbur Smith & Associates from 1972-1979, The Maguire Group from 1979-1983, and Fitzgerald & Halliday, Inc. from 1983-1995. Professional memberships include American Planning Association, IBTTA, and American Civil Engineers Society.

He was a proud member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, Clarkesville. He lived in Virginia and Connecticutt and upon retiring he and his wife, Barbara moved to Georgia. He loved woodworking, hiking, photography, gardening and meeting at Crossroads Cafe on Thursdays for breakfast with his buddies.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fiengo Johns; his children, James M. Johns III, Robert Hall Johns (Samantha), John E. Fiengo, and Richard S. Fiengo (Kristen); grandchildren, Benjamin Johns, Abigail Johns and William Johns, all of New York, Megan Johns of Connecticutt, Nicholas Fiengo, and Ashley Fiengo Hoyt (Kyle) of Connecticutt, Jennifer E Fiengo of South Carolina, and Timothy Fiengo of Connecticutt; brother, Robert Johns (Janine) of Glen Allen, Virginia, and their daughter, Allison of Washington D.C.; and The Hall & Johns Family cousins of Virginia and United States. 

We want to thank and acknowledge the caregivers for Jim: Visiting Angels, Pruitt Hospice staff, Right at Home, Donna Loudermilk and are forever grateful for Habersham Home East nurses and staff. Also, we need to especially thank our FPCC church family, they have been with us each step of the way.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Hillside Memorial, Clarkesville.
