Many things went according to plan for incumbents Tuesday night in the primary election, but Commissioner Bruce Palmer not even making it to the runoff was perhaps the most shocking turn of events.
Challengers Kelly Woodall (38.3%) and Eric Holbrooks (31%) will unofficially advance to a runoff in District 1, giving the county a new commissioner for the first time since Ty Akins took office to finish out Tim Stamey's term. Palmer (30.7%) lost to Holbrooks by 20 votes unofficially.
In District 4, Bruce Harkness earned 70% of the vote to defeat Wade Rhodes and earn a second term on the board. Akins was elected to his first full term in District 5 by gaining 58.4% against two challengers – Locke Arnold (22.3%) and Gisela McGugan (18.7%).
Board of Education members Doug Westmoreland (55.6%) and Dr. Robert Barron (54.7%) were both re-elected against respective challengers Brett Barden and Ernie Garrett.
