Funeral services for Walter Curtis "Billy" Phillips, 84, of Mount Airy, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville with the Rev. Amanda Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. John Anderson officiating at the graveside. Military honors will be provided by Grant Reeves Honor Guard.

Mr. Phillips went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022.

Born Aug. 6, 1938, in Madison, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Fred and Nellie Jones Phillips.

Billy served his country proudly in the United States Army during the end of the Korean Conflict as a driver for the company commander. He retired as a supervisor in the construction industry. In his spare time, Billy enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, trail biking, camping with his family, and was an avid lover of fast, shiny cars.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Gaynell Matheson Phillips of Mount Airy; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Allen Shedd of Mount Airy, Billie Jo and Duval Carter of the Turnerville community, and Sequeena and Mark Nobles of Lehigh Acres, Florida; sister, Jean Smith of Westminster, South Carolina; five grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Tiny.
