The City of Cornelia Celebrated Drinking Water Week and sponsored a fire hydrant coloring contest.
Firemen from Cornelia Fire Dept chose three out of over 100 designs to be re-created onto three of Cornelia’s hydrants downtown.
Art teachers Lori Gough from South Habersham and Tonya Church from Level Grove Elementary School, had their classes participate in promoting awareness of safe drinking water.
“The idea for the contest was developed as a fun way to educate our community about our most precious resource – water,” Utilities Specialist Vicki Vinson said. “This program provides a way to engage students in learning about their drinking water, where it comes from, how it is used, and how vital it is to sustainable communities.”
The locations of the painted hydrants will be at the corner of Irvin St. and North Main, the corner of South Main St. and Front St., and on Clarkesville St. across from the Train Depot.
Tallulah Falls School rising senior Annabelle Jackson, a native of Cornelia, will be painting the hydrants. Jackson is already an accomplished artist who has experience painting murals, and excels in all aspects of the visual arts.
