A man died Monday night after confronting Habersham County Sheriff’s deputies with a weapon in Mt. Airy.
Deputies responded to a 911 call on Cross Street, where the caller said someone in the home had a gun. The call was disconnected, and responding deputies had trouble contacting anyone when they reached the home.
The door finally opened and revealed a man holding a weapon, and deputies fired at him.
“The deputies administered CPR and rendered aid until Habersham EMS responded. The man died as a result of his injuries. An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office,” a GBI release said. “The crime scene investigation determined that the gun the man was armed with was a replica firearm.”
The man shot was later identified as Anthony Maurice Tollison, 39, of Mt. Airy.
“The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and upon completion, it will be provided to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review,” the GBi said.
This is the 87th officer involved shooting the GBI has worked in 2022.
Sheriff Joey Terrell said his deputies were all safe, but he could not comment further at this time due to the GBI investigation. Terrell thanked the police departments from Demorest, Cornelia and Mt. Airy, as well as the GBI and Habersham Emergency Services for their quick response and assistance with the case.
