Habersham Central went on brief lockdown Thursday to deal with a student who appeared to be “under the influence.”
Principal Dr. Jonathan Stribling said that the student was believed to be affected by a “mind-altering substance” and that he initially wandered out into the halls in a “non-threatening manner.” But he also was not cooperating with school administrators, Stribling said.
Later, the student ran outside and was apprehended by law enforcement. Out of an abundance of caution, Stribling said he made the decision to lock down the school.
“I locked the school down as a precautionary measure,” Stribling told parents on an all-call. “It turns out that there was no direct threat to the school. Safety is my No. 1 priority, and it governs all decisions made at the school.”
Sheriff Joey Terrell echoed his sentiment that there was no imminent threat to any other students.
The lockdown remained while the student was evaluated by paramedics, and when he was taken from the campus by law enforcement, the lockdown was lifted.
