After three hearings and little public comment, the Habersham County Board of Education is the first taxing entity in the county to opt out of House Bill 581. The decision comes after many considerations, including a potential increase in the millage rate if accepted and the possible loss of state and federal funding.
“The constitutional amendment … said that we could opt out if it was in the best interest of our students,” Board Member Doug Westmoreland said. “So I can lay my head on my pillow at night and I know that I’ve done the right thing … for our students.”
