BREAKING: Mellichamp to retire as Piedmont president

Piedmont University President James Mellichamp announced Monday that he will retire after 40 years at the school.

The announcement comes after a Monday meeting of the university's Board of Trustees that was called in the wake of controversies that have come to light in the last few months regarding treatment of students and staff by the administration, as well as major financial concerns.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve this institution for the last four decades. Together, we have expanded our physical footprint, athletic and residential programs, academic offerings, and reputation for educational excellence," Mellichamp said. "We have taken Piedmont to heights that those who came before me could hardly imagine, and we have positioned this university for even greater things ahead."

"I am humbled and grateful to say that Piedmont University will forever be part of me."
