Cornelia P.D. officer injured in rollover

Georgia State Patrol responded to a call of a two-vehicle wreck at State route 105 (specifically North Main Street) and Camp Creek Road in Cornelia around 4:36 p.m. Oct. 29, which resulted in a Cornelia Police Department officer injury.  The accident involved a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Angela Burrell of Mt. Airy and a 2016 Ford F-150 Cornelia Police Department vehicle driven by Cornelia P.D. Sgt. Michael Lewallen.  

“Vehicle No. 1 (Dodge Caravan) was traveling south on Camp Creek Road. Vehicle No. 2 (Cornelia P.D. vehicle) was traveling west on [SR] 105,” according to the GSP Public Information Office. “Vehicle No. 1 failed to obey the traffic control device, striking vehicle No.2 in the passenger side with the front of vehicle No. 1.  After impact, vehicle No. 1 came to a controlled rest in the eastbound lane of [SR] 105.  Vehicle No. 2 came to an uncontrolled rest, after overturning, on the north shoulder on its top facing east.” 

Burrel was charged with failure to obey traffic control devices. Lewallen was transferred to Habersham Medical Center with minor injuries. Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith said Lewallen has been treated and released from the emergency room.
