E-911 event for kids returns Thursday

The 14th annual Habersham County E-911 Children’s Fun Festival will take place Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Habersham Fairgrounds in Clarkesville.

According to 911 Director Lynn Smith, the Children’s Fun Festival was first held in 2006 as a way for law enforcement to engage with children and members of the community in a genial, festive atmosphere. The event is also intended to eliminate any fear that may naturally exist between young children and police officers.

Hayrides, interactive exhibits, helicopters, a dunking booth, a wrestling show and an abundance of candy will be available on the fairgrounds property for those in attendance.

E-911 Children’s Fun Festival was canceled last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith said. But now, with public events and gatherings becoming more frequent, Smith and other organizers believed it was time to once again host the festival for families who want to attend.

Smith said that while there’s still some uncertainty and hesitance surrounding public gatherings due to fluctuating positivity rates of coronavirus cases, she expects a solid turnout.

“When the fair came, we figured we’d go ahead and bring [the festival] back,” Smith said. “I believe people are ready to get back to some normalcy.”

Smith added that the county has picked up a slew of new vendors for the festival, and that DJ Chad Mann will be providing festival-goers with a range of music.

Costumes are welcome in the spirit of Halloween.

Parking at the fairground will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is set to run from 5-8 p.m.

The festival is free to all members of the public.
