Early voting for special Dec. 3 election ends Nov. 27

The special election for county commissioner is set for Dec. 3, but early voting ends Nov. 27.

The special election for county commissioner is set for Dec. 3, but early voting ends Nov. 27.

Habersham Countians will have one more chance to choose between candidates Darrin Johnston and Tim Stamey for county commissioner (district five) during a Dec. 3 runoff election.

Because there were five candidates on the ballot for the Nov. 5 general/special election and neither candidate won more than 50% of the vote, Georgia Law required that the top two candidates, Johnston and Stamey, advance to a runoff election.

In the Nov. 5 general/special election, approximately 3,662 votes were cast regarding the District 5 commissioner seat.

Of the total votes, Johnston received approximately 28.78% (1,054 voters) and Stamey received approximately 23.92% (876 voters).

Early voting will continue this week until Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office, located in the new Habersham County Administration Building, 130 Jacob’s Way, Suite 101, Clarkesville.

According to Habersham County Election Supervisor/Chief Registrar Laurel L. Ellison, as of Monday, Nov. 25, a total of 360 early voting in office and advance voting ballots were tallied, 343 absentee ballots were mailed and 150 absentee ballots were received.

However, many more in the community have the opportunity to make their voices heard. There are 26,374 active registered voters in Habersham County and 28,211 total registered voters.

Absentee ballots are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office.

Advance voting will also continue from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Nov. 27 at the Habersham North Precinct, located at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center, 120 Paul Franklin Road (Toccoa Highway), Clarkesville, and the Habersham South Precinct, located at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, 325 Oak St. (banquet hall/gym), Cornelia.
