Father shoots man to protect his daughter

Habersham County Sheriff's deputies were called to a shooting Tuesday night.

A man was shot in the Sautee area late Tuesday night when he would not stop attacking his girlfriend, Habersham Sheriff's Office said.
The woman's father – identified as 55-year-old Cory Merchant – warned Justin Rachal, 26, of Winterville to stop physically assaulting her, but he refused.
"It was a violent altercation," Lt. Murray Kogod of the Habersham County Sheriff's Office said. "The father tried to step in and stop it, but he was getting more and more aggressive."
