Habersham 4-H students cap off incredible year

   Habersham County’s 4-H Club raked in the ribbons for the calendar year 2019, as students from all over the county showed their prowess in various fields of agriculture and the arts. 

   The students were honored at the Dec. 16 Habersham County Commission meeting, though several of them missed the meeting due to illness.

   The food product development team placed third in the State for their creation of Owl Go Fruity Granola Bars. Team members were Mercy Bowen, Tabitha Ramey, Christine Budd and Tianna Ramey, and Camden Hughes.

   In poultry judging, Christine Budd placed fourth at the district competition for the senior team, while Rachel Dailey placed first and Haley Standridge placed seventh for the juniors.

   Autumn Samsel placed 10th overall for the juniors in forestry in her first year.

   The club had many students fare well in the livestock competition at the Georgia National Fair livestock shows. 

   Students who placed in the top 10 or received an honorable mention were Luke Berkshire, Adam Caudell, Jacey Crane, Kylee Evans, Zaxsen Faries, Marley McConnell, Holland Nunnally, Luke Nunnally, Blaire Saylors, Lilly Standridge, Lilly Worley and Madison Worley.

   In Cotton Boll & Consumer Judging, Habersham’s senior team placed fourth in the district out of 11 teams with Tianna Ramey placing eighth overall and first place in oral reasons. Camden Hughes placed third in presentation and Rachel Dailey took seventh. The junior team placed third in the district. Autumn Samsel placed fifth and Edwin Wood seventh as high individuals. Haley Standridge, Mont Wood, Edwin Wood, Abby Horne and Autumn Samsel all placed in the top 10 for presentation. Haley also place third in oral reasons. There were 149 competitors. 

   District project achievement winners were Christine Budd, third in Communications; Rachel Dailey, second in Piano; Luke Fish, third in Drama; Camden Hughes, third in Public Speaking; Catie Long, third in Vocal Performance; and Tianna Ramey, fourth in Health. There were 542 competitors. 

   Each year hundreds of hopeful 4-H’ers try out for the nationally acclaimed performing arts group Clovers & Company. Allison, Katie-Claire and Patrick Highsmith were among the 60 cast members selected to represent the group in 2019-2020.

   Tianna Ramey was selected to represent Georgia as a Healthy Living Ambassador for 2018-2019. 

   Tianna was selected as one of six applicants to serve a year-long term sharing ways to feature healthy nutrition and physically active lifestyles, along with strategies for team building and working with youth and making healthy snacks, preparing healthy meals, learning about community gardens, and participating in fun exercises and games. Tianna spent four days in Washington at the National Youth Summit on Healthy Living.

   Lexi Arrendale, Rachel Dailey, and Camden Hughes attended a four-day Southern Region Teen Leader Conference along with 13 other southeast states in September. Over 400 4-H youth & adults shared ideas to empower & inspire to make a positive change in the southeast. They also adopted a school in Kentucky, purchasing over $2,500 in school supplies. 

   Officers for the 2019-2020 Habersham 4-H County Council are: President, Katie-Claire Highsmith; Vice Presidents, Rachel Dailey and Camden Hughes; Secretary, Tabitha Ramey; Parliamentarian, Patrick Highsmith; Senior Representative, Lexi Arrendale; Junior Representatives, Allison Highsmith and Edwin Wood.
