Despite the cancelation of many events throughout the area, the Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720 plans to hold a Veterans Day program today at 5 p.m. at the Wall of Honor.

“We’re planning to keep things short and sweet. We’re going to have a short presentation, followed by the honor guard doing a three-volley salute and the playing of Taps,” said post commander Bill Miles.

Miles added that the biggest problem the VFW faces is a lack of chairs, as all of the ones normally used for events have been packed inside a storage unit while the Post is being remodeled inside.

“All of our chairs are packed in the back of a CONEX box, and it’s not worth digging them all out for just one program,” Miles said. “So we will have tents set up and we’ll be social distancing, but the plan is to keep it brief.”

Miles added that the VFW would also be doing a Buddy Poppy drive today from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Walmart parking lot in Cornelia.

With the chance of rain in the forecast, Miles said that those interested in attending either event should keep an eye on the Post’s Facebook page for changes or cancelations.

“I plan on making a decision (Wednesday) morning, and that will be on the Post’s Facebook page,” Miles said.
