Wrong name released in Gwinnett shooting

Henry Parker Whitley, 31, is still wanted by law enforcement.

Henry Parker Whitley, 31, is still wanted by law enforcement.

The man involved in a shooting in Gwinnett on Friday was not wanted fugitive Henry Parker Whitley, as law enforcement officials initially released the wrong name to media outlets.

The suspect – James Edward Perkins, age 34 – was later identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as the suspect being charged with shooting a Gwinnett County Sheriff’s deputy multiple times.

Perkins barricaded himself in his car after his escape attempt ended with a crash in an apartment complex on the afternoon of June 10. He was shot in response by other officers after shooting the deputy, and both were expected to make full recoveries.

Whitley, 31, who escaped a chop shop raid by Hall and Habersham County deputies last week, is still on the loose.

The story in Wednesday’s edition of The Northeast Georgian reports that Whitley was captured in the shooting, but that was based on an erroneous report by law enforcement sources.
