Habersham Central’s volleyball team took one of four matches in a tournament over the weekend against tough competition to sharpen up for the final weeks of the season leading to the region tournament.
The Lady Raiders (18-12) knocked off Jackson County on Saturday but fell to Loganville, George Walton Academy and Athens Academy.
“We played some really tough competition there, and hopefully that prepares us for the next few matches,” Lady Raiders coach Lindsey Herrin said. “We did not play poorly there, though lately we have not been hitting as well as we could be. We have put ourselves in position to win only to fall off, so we are hoping we will get it going now.”
Habersham knocked off Winder-Barrow in straight sets Tuesday night to lock in the No. 3 seed in the regional tournament. The Lady Raiders also took a set off Buford before falling in the third set. It was the first time a regional opponent won a set against the Lady Wolves.
"It was by far the best we have played all season," Herrin said of Tuesday's two region matches at Lanier High School.
The No. 3 seed for the Lady Raiders means a far easier path to a state playoff berth in the tournament with a first-round match against Central Gwinnett.
The Lady Raiders’ scheduled match with White County was moved from Thursday to Wednesday and both the middle school team and junior Abbey Donaldson will be recognized at the game. Donaldson passed 1,000 career assists during the weekend tournament and is the first to do so under Herrin’s tenure of 15 years.
Habersham gets another shot at White County on the road Tuesday, Oct. 5, and will also tangle with county neighbor Tallulah Falls. Their final home game of the regular season is Thursday, Oct. 7, against Stephens County.
