Funeral services for Awa Nix Smith, 95, of Demorest, were held Sunday, March 27, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Jacob Griffin and Dr. Tom Mewborn officiated. Interment followed in Yonah Memorial Gardens.

  Mrs. Smith passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022.

  Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 28, 1926 in Habersham County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Smith; parents, Lillie and George Nix; father, Ernest Nix; sisters, Annie Lanic and Mildred Hollified; and brothers, Jim Nix and Harold Nix.

  She was an educator for 30 years who taught at Woodville Elementary, Demorest Elementary, and Clarkesville Elementary. She was a faithful member of Demorest Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught an adult Sunday School class, and was the church treasurer for many years. Awa enjoyed gardening, cooking, and canning.

  Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Julian Peeples of Dalton; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Robyn Smith of Monroe; sisters, Mary Jane Kennedy (Verner) of Demorest and Pearl Brown of Carnesville; brother, Earl Nix, of Scaly Mountain, North Carolina; grandchildren, Julie and Grant Mantooth and Dan and Katie Peeples, all of Dalton; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac Mantooth and Nate, Ansley, and Luke Peeples; and nieces and nephews.
