In consideration of public health and safety, a celebration of life for Charles Freeman Witt, 72, of Habersham County will be held later at the Mount Bethel Community Church Cemetery.
Charles passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born Nov. 17, 1948, in San Diego, California, he was the son of the late Eugene and Virginia Caudell Witt.
Charles spent his childhood in Poway, California. He married Kathy Dodd Jan. 26, 1969, in Habersham County at Mount Bethel Church of God. They returned to California to continue their school careers completing college at San Diego State University with degrees in education. In 1973 they moved to Georgia. Charles enjoyed many occupations; metal working, golf car sales, and as a small business owner of Custom Designs Inc. which specialized in Army Mechanical Mules sales and restoration. In 1996 Charles started his 18-year teaching career at Gainesville City School System where he taught technology at Gainesville City High School. During this time, he was able to complete his master’s degree from Lesley University. After retirement Charles became the country's leading expert on the Army Mechanical Mule. People from across the country sought his advice for the repairs, parts and service for their mules.
Charles volunteered his time to the Boy Scouts of America through Troop No. 5 in Clarkesville. Where he held many positions including scoutmaster. Charles was an avid baseball fan who spent much of his time as a coach, umpire and volunteer. His love for the game inspired many others. He attended Mt. Bethel Church for 50 years, where he served faithfully.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Kathy Dodd Witt of Habersham; daughter, Carly Witt Gesite (Al Wynn) of Woodstock; son, Logan Charles Witt (Jenny) of Mount Airy; five grandchildren; sisters, Joni Greene (Tom), and Marisa Witt; brother, Mark Witt, all of California; extended family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Youth Fund of Mount Bethel Community Church 1668 Talmadge Dr. Toccoa, GA 30577.
