Funeral services for George T. Grant, 93, of Clarkesville, were held Monday, Feb. 3, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Pletsch, the Rev. Ashley Grant and the Rev. Ben Hames officiated. Interment followed the service in the church cemetery.
Mr. Grant passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020 at his residence.
Born July 3, 1926, in Habersham County, Mr. Grant was the son of the late Jess H. and Mary Lou Benfield Grant. In addition to his parents, Mr. Grant is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Letha Leola Hale Grant; sister Willie Wines; and brothers Cecil Grant, J.C. Grant and Wilmer Grant.
He was a United States Army, World War II Veteran. Mr. Grant met his wife, Letha while in service at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. They would soon after marry and return to Habersham County where Mr. Grant was a brick mason until the early 60's. Mr. Grant then worked for the American Red Cross as a Chief Building Advisor and he later retired as Head Appraiser for Small Business Association - Disaster Relief. Mr. Grant was a 60-year member and Past Master of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge No. 325 F&AM and he was a former deacon and founding member of Hollywood Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and wood carver. Mr. Grant also loved history and was a past president of the Habersham Historical Society. He was currently a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Rene Grant of Clarkesville, and Mark and Mary Alice Grant of Woodstock; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Jerry Weaver of Ellijay, and Lana and Jeff Hames of Clarkesville; as well as 13 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
