Funeral services for Hal Wayne Chestnutt, 69, of Clarkesville, were held Sunday, Aug. 25, at Hills Crossing Baptist Church. The Rev. Gene Chestnutt, the Rev. Walter Singletary, the Rev. David Stancil and Asst. Chief Kevin Sprinkle officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Chestnutt passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019.

Born May 16, 1950, in Sylvester, he was the son of the late Sam L. and Wynell C. Howell Chestnutt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chestnutt is preceded in death by a brother, David Chestnutt; and father-in-law, the Rev. Gerald Miller.

He graduated from Tift County High School and earned an A.A. degree inwildlife from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and B.A. degree in psychology from Piedmont College.  Mr. Chestnutt was a United States Army Vietnam Era Veteran and was stationed at Camp David. He was a fire fighter and chaplain with Clarkesville Fire Department with over 20 years of loyal service. Mr. Chestnutt was the retired manager of Lake Burton Hatchery and regional stock coordinator with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division.  He was a member of Hills Crossing Baptist Church where he was past deacon chair and Sunday school teacher, mission trip coordinator and was a R.A. leader and audio technician.  Mr. Chestnutt spent many years coaching, refereeing and umpiring with Habersham County Athletics and he was an avid woodworker. 

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Tawanda Sue Miller Chestnutt; son, Hal Wayne Murphy Chestnutt, Jr. (fiancé, Jennifer French) of Toccoa; son and daughter-in-law, Don M. and Rachel Chestnutt of Canton; mother-in-law, Leo Miller of Clarkesville; brothers, the Rev. Gene Chestnutt (Lynn) of Phenix City, Alabama, Terry Chestnutt (Vicki) of Valley, Alabama, Drew Chestnutt (Debbie) of Sylvester, and Brian Chestnutt (Leigh) of Warner Robins; brothers-in-law, Dewayne Miller (Cindi) of Mississippi, Bobby Miller (Margie) of North Augusta, South Carolina, and Tommy Miller of North Augusta, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Darnell Miller of North Augusta, South Carolina; granddaughters, Erin Chestnutt, Hallie Chestnutt and Ella Chestnutt; great-granddaughter, Lilah McKay; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
