Graveside services for Lewis Canup, 90, of Clarkesville, were held Sunday, Aug. 23, at Hillside Gardens Cemetery in Clarkesville.

  Mr. Canup passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

  Born Feb. 16, 1930, in Hiawassee, Mr. Canup was the son of the late Smith Monroe Canup and Annie Aurora Allison Canup. In addition to his parents, Mr. Canup is preceded in death by his wife, Laraine Burke Canup; brothers, Edward Canup, Charles Canup and Bobby Canup; and sisters, Ruth Canup, Margie Nell Brown and Elene Ravan.

After graduating from The Nacoochee School, Mr. Canup went to work for the Georgia Department of Transportation in 1952 and would also begin work on his PE bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia. He would retire as District 1 Engineer with 34 years of service. It wouldn't take long before Mr. Canup realized retirement wasn't for him. Two weeks later he began working for Habersham County as County Administrator, later County Engineer, the position from which he retired in June of 2015. Mr. Canup was a man of well-founded faith and extremely high moral character. He loved the Lord and he loved his family. Mr. Canup was a member, deacon, past adult Sunday School director and past choir leader at Macedonia Baptist Church.  

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and the Rev. Larry Free of Clarkesville, Kathrine "Kathie" and Jerry Ivester of Hartwell, and Tamara and Michael Jamison of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sons and daughters-in-law, R. Keith and Judy Canup, and Timothy "Tim" and Kim Canup, all of Toccoa; sisters, Jean Canup Stancil of Cleveland, and Kathleen Canup Taylor of Chapin, South Carolina; brother, Lamar Canup of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; as well as special caregiver, Millie London (Bo) of Cleveland.
