Plumer D. 'Buddy' Ayers Jr.

A celebration of life for Plumer D. "Buddy" Ayers Jr, 90, of Cornelia, was held Saturday, May 11, at Mountain View Cemetery in Marietta.

Mr. Ayers passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019. Mr. Ayers and his wife, Sondra were married for 45 years and had no children.  

Born March 28, 1929, in Cornelia, he was the son of the late Plumer D. Ayers Sr. and Myrtle Garrison Ayers. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Virginia, Dorothy "Dot" and Peggy; and his son, Dan. 

He served his country for four years in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952. He returned home for a short time, then moved to Atlanta. He trained at Crawford Long Hospital and became an X-Ray technician.  After a year at that hospital, he married, and they moved to Marietta. They had twin boys, David and Dan in 1955 and a daughter, Jeanne in 1957. In early 1970, they divorced and later that year she became sick ending up in Kennestone Hospital where she died.

Mr. Ayers was employed at Kennestone Hospital from 1954-1982. He began working as an X-Ray technician and shortly after starting became Chief X-Ray technician. He then worked at a doctor's office for another 10 years and finally retired in 1992.

He married Sondra Stone, who worked as an administrative secretary in the X-Ray department, in April 1974.  In 1998, he and Sondra moved back to Cornelia, bought a house and were always busy doing something.

Habersham Crematory was in charge of cremation, and his ashes were returned to Mrs. Ayers. Mrs. Ayers and stepson, David planned a celebration of Mr. Ayers life.  David traveled from Marietta to pick up his stepmother and they traveled back to Marietta for the service at Mountain View Cemetery. Afterwards, Mrs. Ayers returned to Cornelia where she will continue to live.
