Mrs. Powers went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Oct. 23, 2022.

Born March 11, 1934, in Villa Rica, she was the daughter of the late George P. Clower and Grace Helton Clower. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband of 63 years, Robert Tanner Powers Jr.; daughter, Grace House; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Gibbs Powers; sisters, Reba Ortenburg, Ann Turner, Charlotte Sprayberry, Martha Sims, and Mary Boles; and stepfather, Willie Smith.

She is survived by her son, Rick and daughter-in-law, Peggy Powers of Lakemont; grandsons, Casey Powers and wife, Tina of Demorest, and Chris House and wife, Deanne of Clayton; great-grandchildren, Corey Powers, Cassie Powers and Lauren Ryals; and five great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Riley Smith and wife, Jean of Carrolton; sister, Rachel Howell of Villa Rica; brother-in-law, Jack Powers and wife, Barbara of Mt. Airy; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dickerson of Green Cove Springs Florida, Pat Brown and Joanne Powers of North Carolina; many nieces, nephews and friends.

She grew up on a farm in Carroll County, which she could tell you many stories of how her and her siblings would work and play during their childhood. She would often speak of how the school would close at harvest time which allowed all the children to participate, which included her story telling of how she would pick cotton, a task that she did not care for.

She graduated as Valedictorian from her high school class in Carroll County, and then set off to Atlanta to work at the telephone company as a switch board operator.  Soon afterwards, she met her husband of 63 years and relocated to Cornelia.

Sophie always loved fashion which led her to manage Cato Department Store in Cornelia for several years. After her retirement, she and her husband loved selling and purchasing antiques. They spent most of their weekends selling their finds at the Dillard Flea Market where they met and made lifelong friends.

Mrs. Powers attended Hillside Baptist Church and was a charter member there. She was a Sunday school teacher in her early days and continued to attend until a couple of years ago due to failing health. She loved her church and church family and loved to sing the Baptist hymns which she knew most of the words to. She was an avid reader.  She read her Bible daily and left many notes in her Bible and her copy of Oswald Chambers My Utmost for His Highest. Her notes will be treasured for future generations.

In lieu of flowers, you may honor Sophie by sending donations to Hillside Baptist Church, P.O, Box 726, 324 Level Grove Rd, Cornelia, GA 30531.
